Dream Walk - Flash fiction

Writer: Jason HaskinsJason Haskins

Black and white image of the Boise River, lined with trees on both banks.

In 2025, one of the projects I am working on is moving a selection of short fiction, monologues, and other stories from The Journey of Now blog over to my website. This piece of flash fiction, Dream Walk, originally appeared in January 2017 and written as an entry for a 101-word contest. Below is an updated and slightly edited version.

He walks, barefoot and full of vigor. The dry grass below his feet irritates but does not pain. In the background, the building is ablaze. Ashes rise, darkening the sky. The woman is now in sight, also steadfast in her approach, stoic and eager.

Their hands clasp and their bodies press together. Wispy strands of her chestnut hair brushes gently against the man's face. "It's finally tomorrow," he says.

"It's too late. Tomorrow I will be with him," she replies.

"What about now?"

"Now? Now is tomorrow with minor change."

Our hands release, the ash falls and turns out, dreams never meld.

Thanks for reading. If you enjoy these short stories, monologues, The Journey of Now articles, and more, please consider a book purchase or a small monetary contribution of your choosing via Venmo ( jason-haskins-1 ) so I can continue to bring you more. No worries if not. Even sharing in your various spheres is a plus. Much appreciation!
